How Slow-Living Are You?

Stephanie O’Dea is author of Slow Living: Cultivating a Life of Purpose in a Hustle-Driven World. She is a “slow-living coach.” This made me laugh out loud. She must not be in the midst of a major move which entails constant decision-making hustle around packing/unpacking a myriad of stuff: Will this fit in my new home? If not, what do I do with it? Then, upon arrival, this will not fit! What do I do with it? However, I do know I am making move-hustle progress because my dreams no longer are about packing; last night I dreamt about vacation, an escape from the unpacking process.

O’Dea started her slow-living journey with “A Year of Slow Cooking.” She believes that cooking is a chore, not something that she wants to do, so she loves her crockpot. I gave away my crockpot. I enjoy cooking fresh food “from scratch,” but I might need some slow-living ideas when I finish unpacking boxes.

I found out that I could “join 10,000+ Students of Life” by subscribing to the “Sloww (not a typo!) Sunday newsletter.” Instead, I chose to hustle up on this phenomenon briefly online before jumping into another book for my overcrowded bookshelves. Here are some highlights of Slow Living and the Slow Movement:

  • Organizational psychologist Geir Berthelsen created a think tank in 1999, The World Institute of Slowness, advocating that “…the best thinking comes from a walk in the slow lane…slowness is the forgotten dimension to time. Unlike chronological time, it is non-linear, time here and now, time that works for you, extraordinary time. So why be fast when you can be slow? Slowness is also about balance, so if you must hurry, then hurry slowly.” Is hurry slowly an oxymoron?
  • Nearly two decades later, Canadian journalist Carl Honoré wrote a book titled In Praise of Slowness: Challenging the Cult of Speed.
  • Beyond slow living and slow food, today there is a slew (or stew) of slowness – slow money, slow parenting, slow education, slow reading, slow medicine, slow gardening, and slow religion. In 30 countries there are 236 cities that call themselves slow cities! Who knew?
  • According to Slow Living 201 (I skipped the 101 version), there are 15 adjectives for slow living: paced, unbusy, balanced, intentional, connected, deep, purposeful, holistic, soulful, long-view, low-stress, eased, time-rich, conscious, and mindful. https://www.sloww.co/slow-living-201/

I completely agree that mindfulness is a practice well worth putting into your daily routine. I participate every morning in an online mindfulness group with 20 minutes of silent mindful reflection. I practice mindfulness at other times of the day too, especially when gardening or cooking. I find these slow-breath actions grounding — literally grounding when working with soil in my yard. But honestly, I use some hustle in other parts of my life. Do I need to read O’Dea’s Slow Living book?

Birthday Time

We are not first in making up catchphrases about time, but our cultural time fragments tell a lot about who we are when we say…

“Take your time…[It’s] time to…Running out of time… Free time…Time-strapped…Be on time…Time stopped …[It’s] high time…Time machine…Kill time…Time is money…A waste of time…Manage your time…Save time…Spend time…Time is of the essence…What time is it?”

Time flies, as the saying goes. Roman poet Virgil (70-19 BC) is credited with this timely slogan, first given as “Fugit irreparabile tempus” or “It escapes, irretrievable time.”

And yes, time appears to “escape,” even going faster as we age! After finding how frequently time was mentioned in my retirement survey of 125 individuals (ages 55-96), I wrote about this accelerating phenomenon in Transforming Retirement: Rewire and Grow Your Legacy: “Research backs up this perception. The release of dopamine, the body’s main neurotransmitter involved in time processing, has a drop-off beginning after age 20. This leads to the appearance that time passes faster. Also, your perceptions are different from younger years when you had to process many new events. There are possibilities to combat the speeding timeclock. To make time-travel slow down, do something different! When you are in flow-mode, you do not count hours.”

I just celebrated this blog’s 3-year birthday. Where did the time go? I began writing Pearls of Peace weekly when Mom (1922-2022) was about to turn 99-years-old. I chose Monday morning for online delivery. Why Mondays? At the time, I could not tell you why. Later I realized that my activist mother talked about “Moral Mondays,” as she and her peace colleagues would stand on the corner of the Federal Building in her hometown of South Bend, Indiana, every Monday (yes, even in snow) at evening rush hour to protest ongoing U.S. involvement in war. I stood with Mom a few times when I was visiting her for a long weekend.

As the Middle East/U.S. conflicts churned on, the Heartland reactions of those witnessing this small group of anti-war protestors appeared to change over time. Initially, there were some obscenities shouted out car windows, but people became war weary. I later saw individuals roll down car windows to smile and flash a peace V sign to the protestors. Maybe Margaret Mead was right when she said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” 

Peace seems more elusive today than in earlier post-9-11 days. Wars today are like surround-sound, coming from multiple directions. I make no pretense that weekly writing about pluses and minuses of human nature — to stir a few readers’ thinking about everyday possibilities — might change the world. My Moral Mondays look different from Mom’s, but perhaps we just keep time in our own way.

Resolutions Check-in

Q: Why did the crane cross the road? A: The grass looked greener on the other side. How often do you think there must be a better there than the details of your current life? What would you do with Elon Musk’s money?

It has been 21 days since New Year’s Day and it is time to check-in on your resolution(s). While some mistakenly say you can set a new habit in 21 days, do not believe them. Most studies have found that it takes at least three times longer. If you struggle to make any headway on your desired resolution(s), perhaps you ditch your to-do list and try time blocking or timeboxing.

Successful CEO’s like Bill gates and Elon Musk use time blocking. Musk might win the prize for the most time-managed individual, as he pre-plans his day with no unscheduled time slots!  And as unbelievable as it may seem, Musk’s time blocks are 5-minute segments. Supposedly, he knows how much time any task takes. To not experience a “planning fallacy,” one must keep a timed record of certain tasks, perhaps using a time-tracking app.   

While time blocking may work for Musk and others, it seems robotic. Where is there room for an unexpected phone call from a family member or friend? Where is there a sense of flow or creativity where time-watching is detrimental?  

An argument supporting this regimented goal-setting is Parkinson’s Law: any work tends to expand to fill up the time allotted for it (C. Northcote Parkinson). When time is restricted, a task takes less of your time. Also, the Pareto Principle applies: the 80/20 Rule suggests that around 20% of your efforts will produce 80% of the results (Vilfredo Pareto).

Another time management technique is timeboxing. Time blocking is about planning when you will work on something, while timeboxing has an emphasis on limiting how long you spend on a given task. You set an upper limit on how much time you will do a certain task (exercise for 30 minutes, for example) without having a set time. Timeboxing encourages one’s progress by setting timely and manageable limits. Anyone can do something for 30 minutes a day…with intention.

Where is any focus for looking at the reasons why a person does not follow through on their intentions? Trust me. This will be a productive use of your time, and the first step may take no longer than 5 minutes. Here is a starter version. There is a part of your personality that sets your resolution. Name that part of your personality. There is another part (or two) that does not follow through. Name the part(s). Are you engaged in a parts war? Notice your breathing. Center into calmness. You can embrace opposite parts when you are CONSCIOUS of these parts in the present moment. Find insider peace.
